We want to do as much as possible to ensure that we have a safe Mess-about this year and minimize the risk of spreading Covid 19. We understand everyone has a different level of comfort these days around other people. We ask everyone who comes to practice social distancing, mask wearing, and handwashing per CDC guidelines. We currently have about 36 people signed up for the Messabout plus about 10 in the B&B immediate circle. If that number scares you off we totally understand. About 8 parties have indicated they will be camping on the property while the rest are staying elsewhere. We will do some videoing and maybe even a FaceBook live stream to help those who decide to stay home attend virtually. We have assessed our normal Messabout activities and made changes as needed so please read on and plan accordingly. Above all we want to have a good time without anyone getting sick as a result of our event.
Don’t come if you’re sick. While it should go without saying, We’re going to say it. If you have any symptoms, a fever, have tested positive, or are supposed to be quarantining then please stay home.
Come at your own risk. We do not plan to ask anyone screening questions. Social distancing will not be possible everywhere. For example when walking on the dock.
Friday night dinner plans: Everyone is on their own this year. NC is currently in phase 3 reopening and restaurants can technically serve at 50% capacity; however, we have decided NOT to host our normal Friday night buffet style dinner at the Little Italy restaurant. If you would like to get as close as possible to the “normal” Messabout dinner experience, then we encourage you to order takeout from Little Italy. Link to their menu. Since we don’t know when everyone will arrive we decided to let everyone be on their own rather than attempt to organize a group order.
Saturday lunch plans: Everyone is on their own this year. Normally we cater a BBQ lunch on Saturday but to make things easy and due to concerns about a buffet style spread we instead ask attendees to plan and bring their own meals this year. Just pretend you’re camping! Of course there is a FoodLion and a Walmart just 10 minutes from the shop if you forget something. For those that want less of the camping dining experience there are also restaurants (with curbside takeout or drive through) just a few minutes from the shop: Charlies, Aggies, Mayos, Little Italy, plus the usual suspects, McDonalds, Bojangles, Subway.
Facilities: Porta-Potty (the head), hand-washing, drinking water. If you’ve not been out to our shop before, we don’t have campground-like facilities (shower and bath house) on the property. We do have good clean drinking water, and we will have hand-washing stations set up for your use. As usual we will be renting 2 porta-johns for the event. We will set up fans to keep them as ventilated as possible and we will keep the doors open when vacant. Please wear a mask when using the porta-john and wash your hands afterward. If you are not comfortable using the porta-john then we recommend that you bring some Wag Bags for your own use. If you are not familiar, WagBags are individually packaged chemical toilets that can be thrown in the normal trash.
We wear masks in the boat shops. While we would like for everyone to wear a mask the whole time (and some of us certainly will) we ask that you at a minimum wear a mask indoors (in the boat shops), and when you are closely interacting with anyone (like showing off your awesome boat or when walking out among people on the dock.) We will do our best to keep the boat shops open-air for the best ventilation.
The Gazebo, 4 people at the time. The Gazebo by the water is a great place to get away from the mosquitos (which are very healthy this year), but it is a small space and we ask you to limit occupancy to 4 people at the time.
Taking people out on your boat. This is one of the best parts of the Messabout. Taking others out, swapping boats etc. Everyone has a different level of comfort. We think it is appropriate to wear masks when out on a boat with other people who are not in “your bubble” and we encourage everyone to do so. Of course you are the captain of your own boat so… your boat, your rules.
What if it rains? Plan to be self sufficient. Bring umbrellas or a collapsable tent for your party. Plan for rain. The last thing we want is for everyone to be huddled under the boat shed, in the boat shops, or in the gazebo in a downpour. Right now it’s looking like a pretty good forecast but we could have isolated showers Saturday. Please be mindful of this, be self sufficient, and try to keep socially distant as there is plenty of outdoor space at B&B.
In The Area: If you would like to bring family or friends who are not totally into the sailing scene; there are plenty of things to do and see in this area (you will need a car). If you are interested in History – we are steeped in it; and have a great local museum you can see exhibits on the way in or out of town. There are multiple tourist sites in New Bern, including Tryon Palace the only royal palace in the whole USA! Tryon also has wonderful gardens and we have a new history center very close to the palace.
