What is the Messabout? The Messabout is an annual event held at our shop on the Bay River. We invite past and future builders of our boats to join us to meet, catch up play with boats and generally have a good time. Read below for the schedule we typically follow. The event is informal. Camping is free and available on our property.
Location: At our waterfront workshop site in Maribel, NC. (google maps link) 342 Chapel Creek Drive Bayboro, NC 28515 We have a great site for small boat sailing, including a launch ramp with it’s on own launching dock, a 170’ dock and floating dinghy dock. Your shallow draft boat will happily snuggle alongside the dock for storing and camping in. We have over 4 acres worth of land to camp on (room for 1 RV possibly, contact if interested).
How Much: FREE for the messabout – you pay your own food and accommodations; we provide the water, the dock, and the space and Saturday’s lunch. (BYOB, we provide sodas).
Feel free to arrive anytime on Friday for the start of our informal gathering. Launch your boat, go sailing, hang around the shop or just relax. There is plenty of parking available. You can leave your boat tied up on our dock.
Friday Evening: Typically we would all gather at the local Little Italy Italian restaurant for dinner at around 5pm. However, in the time of Covid we do not want to encourage indoor gatherings so we are currently checking our options and will post here soon.
Saturday: Meet and greet and mingle; sailing of course, and maybe even a race if there is interest. A late lunch (between 1-2pm) will be catered at the shop so make sure you get on the roster of attendees. (BYOB, we provide sodas). Later Saturday afternoon, early evening, Graham will be demonstrating the CNC machine for those who are interested.
Saturday evening will be on your own and hanging out at the shop. Rounding it up with a “dark velvet” after-dinner sail for those who were not completely sated during the day.
Sunday: If there is interest, we may have breakfast in the beautiful town of Oriental just down the road.
Later, more sailing and schmoozing. For those who have no schedule carry on through Mon/Tues whenever – you are welcome to stay as long as you like. Many make a whole week of it but the shop will be back to work!
In The Area: If you would like to bring family or friends who are not totally into the sailing scene; there are plenty of things to do and see in this area (you will need a car). If you are interested in History – we are steeped in it; and have a great local museum you can see exhibits on the way in or out of town. There are multiple tourist sites in New Bern, including Tryon Palace the only royal palace in the whole USA! Tryon also has wonderful gardens and we have a new history center very close to the palace.
A little further afield we have a wonderful NC Maritime Museum and a great Aquarium, and ocean front beaches.
