The first Ocracoke 256 launched. "Sheila B" Built by John and Katrina in Vanuatu.

We launched without too much hassle, cracked the champagne and my wife Katrina christened her Sheila B after her late mother. The inevitable small sorting details were noted but otherwise she went really well. Love the Evinrude G2 (200hp). We hit 40 knots in a light chop. The boat is very dry and easy to handle. We are very much looking forward to enjoying some great times aboard.

About the 256: The 256 is an exciting addition to B&B’s Ocracoke line of powerboats. We have spent many many hours developing every aspect of her construction with the home builder in mind. She is the largest powerboat kit we currently offer.

Options: We have developed the 256 with individual customization in mind. Wood/epoxy boats lend themselves to customization and we have made it a goal with this design to allow the builder choices in design wherever possible. To that end we are offering the 256 Kit in both “open” and “cuddy cabin” kit options seen below.

Open model: The open model (below) incorporates a raised casting platform forward and unimpeded access around the cockpit. A central opening hatch is shown standard but not cut out in the kit.

Cuddy model: The cuddy (below)  model trades the open third frame for a solid bulkhead with companionway door and the casting platform becomes a pair of modest bunk tops (approximately 84″ long bulkhead to bulkhead). A companionway cutout is the only opening in the otherwise solid foredeck. A porta potti could be hidden under the bunks forward of the second bulkhead.

bracketBracket: The 256 has been designed specifically with an integral plywood bracket which is built into the kit to ensure correct positioning and proportions. The bracket consists of 6 1/2″ plywood webs that are integrated into the keel and bottom stringers through cutouts in the transom. Laminated 3/4″ ply forms the bracket transom and 1/2″ ply top and bottom panels complete the box structure which is fully glassed to the hull. The 32″ buoyant bracket can accommodate either twin or single engine installations. For maximum performance a single engine is preferred for both weight savings and increased efficiency.

Construction: She is jig built using the ashcroft method. Shown below without planking. The basic kit includes all plywood frames and stringers, keel/stem and temporary frames (shown in green). We do not offer stringer or other solid wood stock and leave ripping and scarfing stringer stock to the home builder. Her monohedron bottom is planked with single plywood panels which are offered in the level 2 kit with finger scarf joints. CNC cut Okume plywood bulkheads and 3/4″ Birch plywood temporary frames are standard with the basic kit.

Stem/Keel: A complete stem and keel kit is part of the basic option which consist of 17 individual CNC cut Southern Yellow Pine parts which scarf together to form the complete keel . The keel is formed my laminating 3 layers with alternating scarf joints. The starboard stem pieces is shown below. All CNC cut stem/keel parts have markings for bulkheads and temporary frames as well as any stringer positions, waterline, and bearding line for fitting.

Tankage: The standard configuration uses twin 55 gal fuel tanks. This configuration allows for an under console head arrangement. It also allows for access to all tank fittings from inside the console.

Full size Mylar Templates and detailed plan sheets: ……. COST: $450.00
For our overseas builders we offer full size printed templates on rolls of dimensionally stable mylar (shown below). Two 24″ wide mylar strips are taped together to give fulls size outlines of all CNC parts. Using the full size templates and detailed plan sheets, the parts can be accurately duplicated and assembled just like the cnc cut kit.

All Plan sheets are printed on Architectural “D” (24″x36″) paper. Detailed plans consist of the 8 sheets shown below which detail all aspects of construction.

Basic Jig Kit:
The Jig Kit is our most basic offering including:

  • All Plan sheets
  • CNC cut southern yellow pine keel/stem.
  • Permanent and temporary frames for jig construction.
  • Plywood sheets for patterning cockpit soles, coamings and decks.
  • Plywood bottom stringers.
  • CNC cut transom shape.
  • Bracket parts.
  • Chine flats.

The jig kit does NOT include the CNC cut parts for the cockpit soles, cockpit coamings or side/foredecks. These parts can be easily patterned from the boat directly.

Also NOT included are any planking sheets for the sides or bottom of the hull.

These parts ARE offered in the Level 2 kit to give you a head start and save patterning.

Level 1 kit:
The level 1 kit includes everything in the Jig kit with the addition of:

  • All sheets for hull planking (not cnc cut)

Level 2 Kit:
The level 2 kit includes everything in the Jig kit and Level 1 kit with the addition of:

  • CNC cut parts for cockpit soles, cockpit coamings, and side/foredecks.

Due to the nature of these parts, many are cut slightly over-sized to allow for fitting.

The works option just means all available options included. This option includes all the CNC cut parts we offer as well as the console kit. We find more and more that once people build a boat from a CNC kit they never want to go back. This is the option for you. The extra cost pays itself back quickly in time spent patterning and cutting parts.

CNC cut bottom planking:….. COST: $850
We can cut the bottom planking to size with finger joints for joining. This consists of 12 CNC cut sheets for all of the BOTTOM planking only.

Center console Kit:….. COST: $590

Console: The console is 62″x36″x44″ (L-W-H). The console features a integral foot rest and rain proof forward locker. The console has been designed for internal storage or for an under deck porta potti. Access inside the console also provides complete accesss to all fuel tank fittings.

The console kit consists only of the cnc cut plywood parts to assemble the console. Solid stock for cleats should be sourced locally. The kit does NOT include any hardware, fittings or T-top structure. This is left to the builder.

Note that detailed plans for our standard console shown below are included with all kit options.

What isn’t in the kits?

There are no parts in the kit for a bait well or fish box “kill box”. This is one area we have left to the builder because some builders may prefer a prefab bait well/leaning post. Allowances have been made in the weight study to accommodate these additions by the builder. Extra material is left on the cnc cut stern decks to allow for an integral fish box. Similarly, the cnc cut cockpit sole panels are left solid in case you would prefer an express cockpit layout.

We do not offer solid stock in our kits for stringers and cleats because it is difficult to ship in long lengths. We prefer our builders to locally source solid timber and rip their own stringers and cleats to final dimension.

The jig frame is not included in the kit. It is for the builder to locally source dimensional lumber (2×8’s) to build the jig frame as shown in the detailed plans.

B&B offers epoxy and fiberglass however it is not included in the kit options below because some builders already have epoxy and glass. If you need epoxy or fiberglass supplies we will be happy to help.

Fitting out: The kit does not include any hardware for fitting out although B&B is constantly adding products for our kits and we may have many items available soon.
